Challenge

The Methane Guiding Principles (MGP) focus on priority areas for emission reduction actions along the natural gas supply chain, from production to the final consumer. The signatories of these guidelines include a number of participating companies with direct responsibility for the management of methane in various sectors of the natural gas supply chain. These materials are provided on the methaneguidingprinciples.org website.

Solution

SLR, along with our supporting subcontractor, Dr. David Allen, developed the MGP Best Practice guides and a methane cost model as part of the MGP Toolkit for methane reductions. SLR developed a series of eight Best Practice Guides for methane mitigation, synopses, as well as an interactive cost estimation tool.

Members of the MGP group include: Baker Hughes, Beijing Gas, BP, Chevron, Enagas, Eni, Equinor, Exxonmobil, Gazprom, GRTgaz, Petronas, Repsol, Rosneft, Shell, SNAM, SOCAR, Total, TC energy, Wintershall dea, and Woodside.

There are also many supporting organisations with the MGP, participants include: Energy Community, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Energy Institute, Eurogas, Gas Infrastructure Europe, IEA, International Gas Union, International Association of Oil & Gas Producers, IPIECA, Marcogaz, OGO Climate Investments, Rocky Mountain Institute, Sustainable Gas Institute, Teri, UN Environment, and The World Bank.

Impact

MGP with their partner the Sustainable Gas Institute at Imperial College London have used these tools for Master Classes in Universities within the UK and around the world. Materials are provided in English, German, Mandarin, Russian, and Spanish.
