SLR identified waste management challenges and solutions which could be implemented in a harbourside setting to inform the client’s future vision.
Challenge
The city’s harbourside and waterfront areas are popular spots for both residents and tourists. However, peak visitor numbers in spring and summer, coupled with numerous organised events, place significant pressure on waste management and litter control systems.
The capacity of litter bins across the harbourside, staff availability, and waste transfer locations were all identified to be limiting factors in managing additional quantities of waste in peak seasons.
Solution
Following an initial site visit, SLR engaged with a range of stakeholders to collate a list of key concerns and issues, which were then considered in more detail to identify ideas / options for solutions.
Some potential solutions were identified as being deliverable in the short to medium term and some would require more significant investment, to be considered as part of wider infrastructure improvements arising from delivery of the client’s project.
Alongside documentation of constraints and issues, and identification of possible solutions, SLR’s study reviewed best practice examples of high footfall and waterside waste management strategies from across the globe, which were presented as a series of case studies. The outcomes were presented to the stakeholders in a workshop setting.
Impact
SLR’s final report became part of the client’s evidence base of data for use in informing subsequent development of the place vision and implementation process.
