Challenge
Geodynamics Limited is proposing a Geothermal Power Project located near Takara, in the north of the island of Efate in the Republic of Vanuatu. Takara is located approximately 25 kilometres north-east of the capital of Port Vila. Renewable energy generated by the project will be used to displace a component of the island’s current diesel-based electricity generation, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project involves exploration and production drilling, construction and operation of an initial 5 megawatt (MW) and additional 5 MW power plant and associated steamfield wellheads and pipelines.
Our team were engaged to complete an independent Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) to comply with Vanuatu Government Terms of Reference and Equator Principles. The ESIA aims to be a best industry example in Vanuatu for sustainable practices while recognising the rich cultural heritage of the surrounding communities.
Solution
Our team assisted on the following:
Environmental and Social Impact Assessment
Project management and writing of the ESIA, baseline and technical studies, ESIA chapters, conclusions and Environmental and Social Management and Monitoring Plan.
Technical Studies
Baseline field studies for ecology (terrestrial), water, soils, noise and air lead to special technical reports. Further ecology (marine) studies were conducted by sub-consultants.
Social / Cultural and Stakeholder Consultation
SLR has managed specialist sub-consultants with direct experience in Vanuatu to conduct social / cultural mapping of the indigenous communities. This has included recommending a Community Benefits Program to assist the local people with the impacts of the project and programs to facilitate funding for improvements in health, education and agricultural production.
